Questions Sparked by Last-Minute Amendment to Presidential Election Bill

A fierce political row has erupted following the sudden introduction of a last-minute amendment to a major constitutional bill, raising urgent questions among the opposition and political observers over a potential hidden political agenda.

The controversy centers on a newly inserted proposal to establish an electoral college for choosing the President of the Republic.

The unexpected twist has triggered widespread skepticism regarding the true motives behind changing the presidential election format, who will sit on the proposed electoral college, and whether the Head of State will be granted expanded powers.

The spark for this growing debate was the passage of the Constitutional Review Commission Bill in the National Assembly last Tuesday.

As originally designed, the legislation provides for the creation of a dedicated Commission tasked with making formal recommendations to the government for constitutional amendments.

However, it was the late alteration to the draft law—specifically introducing the electoral college model—that caused opposition figures and commentators to react with fury.

In immediate response to the political fallout, the entire issue is set to be fiercely debated this Friday on the current affairs programme “Au Cœur de l’Info”.

Host Nawaz Noorbux will anchor the high-profile broadcast, bringing together key political and legal figures to dissect the implications of the bill.

The panel features Rajen Narsinghen, a constitutional expert who also serves as a Junior Minister, alongside Maneesh Gobin, the former Attorney General and a prominent member of the MSM political bureau.

The debate will broadcast live this Friday, 5 June, starting at 17:00.

Audiences can follow the programme on Radio Plus as well as across the various digital platforms of the Défi Media Group.
