Minister Confirms 10,882 Tonnes of Gas Available to Secure National Energy Supply

Mauritius has sufficient household gas supplies to last until mid-April, the Minister of Commerce has confirmed, dismissing concerns over potential shortages linked to ongoing volatility in the Middle East.

Speaking at a press conference on Monday , 2 March, Michael Sik Yuen offered a firm reassurance to the public regarding the availability of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).

“On the level of gas, we have no reason to worry because this product is subsidised,” the Minister stated, moving to calm anxieties following a high-level committee meeting held earlier Monday, 2 March.

Strategic Reserves

Official figures released by the Minister reveal that the island currently holds a stockpile of 10,882 metric tonnes of gas.

This reserve is calculated to be sufficient to meet national demand until 10 April.

To ensure there is no gap in supply, Mr Sik Yuen confirmed that a fresh shipment is already scheduled to reach Mauritian shores “well before” the April deadline.

Supply Chain Oversight

The assurances follow a strategic review chaired by the Minister to safeguard fuel availability for the coming months.

The meeting involved a comprehensive assessment of procurement contracts alongside the director of the State Trading Corporation (STC).

The government’s primary objective appears to be the pre-emptive management of any logistical risks or disruptions to the supply chain.

By reviewing these contracts in detail, officials aim to maintain stability in the energy sector despite the unpredictable geopolitical climate in the Middle East.
