Mauritius Targets Global Status as 4,000 Yearly Foreign Patients Seek Medical Care
Mauritius is set to transform its economy by positioning itself as a premier global destination for medical treatment and wellness, under a new strategic action plan unveiled by the government.
Addressing the National Assembly, Tourism Minister Michael Sik Yuen announced that the initiative is being developed in collaboration with the Economic Development Board (EDB).
The government views medical tourism as a future strategic pillar of the Mauritian economy, essential for generating significant foreign exchange earnings.
The island nation is already a burgeoning choice for international patients. Current figures reveal that over 4,000 foreign nationals travel to Mauritius annually for healthcare and medical procedures.
A significant portion of this intake—approximately 1,000 patients—is drawn from regional neighbours, including:
- The Seychelles
- Madagascar
- The Comoros
- Mainland Africa
The announcement came in response to a parliamentary question from MP Francisco François, highlighting a concerted effort to scale existing healthcare infrastructure into a world-class offering.
By formalising the sector through this upcoming action plan, authorities aim to solidify the island’s reputation as an “unmissable” destination for those seeking both high-end medical care and holistic well-being.
