Mauritius Records 1st Local Mpox Transmission of 2026
Mauritius has recorded its first locally transmitted case of Mpox this year, health authorities confirmed on Thursday afternoon, 4 June.
The detection brings the total number of Mpox cases recorded in Mauritius in 2026 to three, with the previous two cases identified as imported.
Patient Isolated at Hospital du Nord
The patient is a 64-year-old Swiss national who has been residing in the north of the island for approximately one year.
Following confirmation of the infection from test results received Thursday afternoon, the man was placed in isolation at the Hospital du Nord, in line with the country’s current health protocols.
Dr Fazil Khodaboccus, the acting director of Health Services, has provided specific details regarding the situation.
Contact Tracing and Public Health Response
A contact tracing operation was launched immediately by health officials to identify individuals who have been in close proximity to the patient.
The measure aims to limit any potential risk of the virus spreading further.
Health authorities note that Mpox is a viral disease primarily transmitted through close skin-to-skin contact.
Key symptoms of the virus include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Swollen lymph nodes
- Skin rashes that progressively develop into crusts or scabs
