Mauritian Golf Course Breaks into World Top 30
La Réserve Golf Links has officially joined the upper echelons of global golf, securing the 28th spot on the prestigious Golfweek Best Top 100 International Courses 2026 (excluding the US).
The ranking marks a historic milestone for the Indian Ocean, as the Mauritian course outpaces several century-old traditional bastions of the sport.
Industry experts suggest the achievement signals a major shift in the regional tourism sector, firmly establishing Mauritius as a premier destination for high-end international golfers.
A Fusion of Scottish Heritage and Tropical Luxury
Co-designed by renowned South African architect Peter Matkovich and Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, the course is the first and only contemporary links-style layout in the region.
Inspired by the rugged coastal terrains of Scotland and Ireland, the course integrates “undulating fairways” and “panoramic ocean views” from every hole.
“The wind becomes a true actor in the game, transforming each round into a different experience,” the developers noted, emphasizing the technical strategy required to navigate the greens that appear to “float on the horizon.”
Sustainability and Strategic Growth
Beyond its aesthetic appeal, La Réserve Golf Links has set a continental precedent as the first course in Africa to achieve GEO Certified® Development status.
This international recognition highlights a commitment to responsible resource management and environmental preservation within the volcanic landscape of Bel Ombre.
For the local economy, the accolade serves as a strategic lever. Golf tourism is viewed as a high-value-added sector capable of:
- Attracting a demanding international clientele.
- Extending the average duration of visitor stays.
- Diversifying the island’s luxury offering beyond traditional beach holidays.
An Immersive Sporting Hub
The course forms part of the broader Heritage Resorts & Golf estate, which now boasts a rare 45-hole championship offering when combined with the existing Le Château Golf Course.
The destination combines five-star hotels, luxury villas, and refined gastronomy to create what promoters describe as a “Mauritian art of living.”
With a year-round favourable climate and high-end infrastructure, Mauritius is now positioned as a credible alternative to the world’s historic golfing giants, redefining the standards for the sport in the Southern Hemisphere.
