Coast Guard Rejects Shark Theory After Boy Age 10 Injured While Surfing

Coast Guard officials have played down reports of a shark attack after a 10-year-old boy was injured while surfing in the Tamarin lagoon on Sunday, 5 April.

The National Coast Guard (NCG) stated that a shark encounter is “unlikely” following a thorough inspection of the waters near a local hotel.

While witnesses at the scene initially suggested the youngster had been preyed upon by a shark, investigators believe his leg injuries may have been caused by a collision with a boat.

Investigation Underway

The incident occurred while the boy was surfing with his father. He was blue-lighted to a private clinic for urgent treatment following the injury.

An NCG officer told TéléPlus that no sharks were spotted during a sweep of the area.

“It is more probable that the child came into contact with a watercraft,” the official noted, though authorities are continuing their enquiries to establish the exact circumstances.

Local Anxiety

Despite official reassurances, a sense of unease has gripped the beach.

While no predators have been sighted, one local fisherman argued that the possibility of a shark being involved cannot be ruled out entirely.

Many beachgoers expressed hesitation about entering the water as news of the injury spread.

Safety Advice

Police have issued a precautionary warning, advising swimmers to remain close to the shore until the investigation is concluded.

The NCG continues to monitor the lagoon while the public awaits definitive findings on what caused the accident.
