Authorities Restrict Heavy Vehicles on 5 Major Routes to Improve Peak Safety

The Commissioner of Police is to enforce a strict crackdown on heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) using key arterial routes during morning rush hours following a multi-vehicle collision at the Caudan roundabout.

In a move noted by the Cabinet, authorities will reinforce the 2009 General Notice No. 2670, which prohibits heavy vehicles from operating on specific roads between 07:00 and 09:30 on weekdays.

The decision follows the road traffic accident on 31 March involving an HGV and several other vehicles.

Major Routes Affected

The enforcement focuses on the primary corridors leading into and around the capital, including:

  • M1 Motorway: From the Phoenix roundabout to the Quay D roundabout, heading Northbound.
  • A1 Road: The stretch between St-Jean roundabout and Place d’Armes, Port-Louis, via Rose-Hill, Beau-Bassin, and Coromandel (in both directions).

Regional Restrictions

The ban also extends to critical links through Ebène and Réduit to alleviate congestion and improve safety.

The Commissioner will ensure compliance on the following routes in both directions:

  • Rose Hill-Trianon Road: From Vandermeersch roundabout to the M1 at Trianon via Ebène.
  • B1 (Avenue Julius Nyerere): Between Rose-Hill Police Station and the M1 at Réduit via Ebène.
  • B120 (Martindale Road): From the University of Mauritius roundabout to the M1, passing the entrance to the State House.

The Cabinet’s directive serves as a formal reminder of existing traffic laws intended to manage heavy vehicle flow during the island’s busiest morning periods.
