Authorities in Mauritius have mobilised emergency services and issued an urgent call for public vigilance following a heavy rain watch released. The Vacoas Meteorological Station issued the warning at 04:45 on 28 April 2026, with the alert remaining in force.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Centre (NDRRMC) confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation as weather conditions threaten the island.

Emergency Services Mobilised

Police, the Special Mobile Force, and the Fire Services have been deployed across the territory to ensure public safety.

Pravind Rughoo, spokesperson for the NDRRMC and the National Emergency Operations Command, has urged citizens to strictly follow official recommendations and remain cautious.

Residents are advised to stay informed through media outlets and mobile applications, including Traffic Watch and My.T Weather.

Safety Guidance for High-Risk Areas

The NDRRMC has issued specific directives for those in the capital and flood-prone regions:

  • Port Louis: In the event of sustained rainfall, residents should seek shelter on higher ground.
  • Urban Risks: Avoid basements, underground car parks, and unnecessary travel.
  • Natural Hazards: Stay clear of flooded roads, rivers, waterfalls, and mountainsides.
  • Landslides: Increased vigilance is required in areas prone to rockfalls or water accumulation; children should be kept away from these locations.

Home Protection and Evacuation

During thunderstorms, the public is advised to disconnect electrical appliances and avoid seeking shelter under trees or tall structures.

To mitigate property damage, authorities suggest using sandbags or flood barriers.

Should water levels rise rapidly, citizens are instructed to prepare for immediate evacuation to higher ground, ensuring emergency kits are ready for use.
