Social activist Bruneau Laurette launches political party

It’s official. Social activist Bruneau Laurette, who was behind the 100,000+ demonstration in Port Louis after the wreck of the MV Wakashio last year, has launched his political party.

It was during a press conference at the Suffren Hotel that he announced that his movement‘Linion Sitwayin Morisien’ (Union of Mauritian Citizens) has become a political party.

The party, he said, brings together “sincere patriots” who have the future of the country at heart.

“Today, it has been 12 months since the citizens of Mauritius took to the streets to show their disgust and anger. This march has gone down in history. We have no choice but to become the shield against the government,” Laurette said.

For the activist, “our political, social, economic, democratic situation has become more dangerous than COVID-19. The Parliament has become a circus. We must send a strong signal to the government for its incompetence and its recklessness.”

The proposals of the ‘Linion Sitwayin Morisien’ include a new Constitution and a Public Protector Act. Lawyer and former MSM MP Sanjeev Teeluckdharry and trade unionist Ivor Tan Yan have joined the party.
