Construction Worker, 31, Dies Following Fall at a Terre-Rouge Site

A mason has died after falling from a construction site in Terre-Rouge on Sunday, 11 January, sparking a formal investigation into workplace safety standards. Sarder Amiur, a resident of Roches-Noires, sustained fatal injuries while installing temporary supports for a ceiling slab on Sunday, 12 January. It is understood that Mr Amiur slipped and fell heavily to the ground during the procedure.

Emergency Response and Medical Findings

Following the incident, Mr Amiur’s employer rushed him to the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Hospital in Pamplemousses.

Despite emergency medical intervention, he was pronounced dead at approximately 10:30 am.

A forensic post-mortem examination, conducted later that day by Dr Sudesh Kumar Gungadin at the Dr A. G. Jeetoo Hospital morgue in Port-Louis, confirmed the cause of death as cranio-cerebral injuries.

Ongoing Investigation

Police authorities have launched an inquiry to establish the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy. Investigators are currently focusing on:

  • Whether mandatory safety protocols were being followed at the time of the accident.
  • Determining potential liability and responsibility for the fatal fall.

The case remains under active investigation by local authorities.

In accordance with national regulations, upholding rigorous safety standards on construction sites is imperative to safeguard the workforce.
