Inmate Dies After 'Violent Altercation' at HMP Melrose

A prisoner has died following a “violent altercation” at HMP Melrose Tuesday evening, December 9, with police launching an immediate investigation.

The inmate, who was gravely injured during the incident, was pronounced dead before reaching the hospital after being urgently evacuated from the facility.

The confrontation, described as a “violent altercation,” erupted late Tuesday, 9th December, within the prison’s Kestrel Unit.

Prison guards and emergency services attended to the critically injured prisoner on site before the decision was made to rush him to hospital.

CID officers from Montagne-Blanche and local police were alerted and immediately dispatched to the scene to begin an inquiry.

The investigation aims to establish the precise sequence of events, the cause of the fight, and determine any potential responsibilities for the death.

The prison administration is cooperating fully with the investigators. HMP Melrose remains under heightened surveillance following the tragic incident.
