Ex-Convict Arrested Over Triolet Burglary Spree Worth Rs 1.5 Million

A former inmate has been arrested and has admitted responsibility for a spate of alarming burglaries in the village of Triolet throughout October. The suspect, identified as Anders Speville, a local resident, was apprehended on November 8 by officers of the Divisional Crime Intelligence Unit (DCIU) – Northern while travelling on a morning bus towards Port-Louis.

Admitted Guilt and Modus Operandi

Following his arrest and transfer to the Criminal Investigation Division in Trou-aux-Biches, Mr Speville confessed to all the reported break-ins during the month.

He subsequently participated in a scene reconstitution, which confirmed the criminal’s method and points of entry.

The total value of stolen goods during the period is estimated to exceed Rs 1.5 million. Victims reported that the burglaries occurred between late night and early morning.

The burglaries shared a similar modus operandi: the suspect exploited unsecured access points or slightly open windows to gain entry.

The thief acted rapidly, seizing valuables before fleeing through side alleys to evade detection and Safe City cameras.

Targeted Locations and Stolen Goods

The incidents were concentrated primarily around the 7th and 8th Miles of Triolet, with residences being targeted opportunistically.

Items stolen included:

  • Mobile phones of various brands
  • Cash
  • Gold and silver jewellery

In some cases, personal effects such as bags or shoes were found discarded outside, providing evidence of the burglar’s speed and precision.

Police Operation and Surveillance

In response to the surge in thefts, the DCIU – Northern launched a targeted operation involving surveillance, CCTV analysis, and patrols in sensitive areas, particularly the side routes used to bypass main roads.

Investigators profiled the culprit as an opportunistic individual, moving on foot or by public transport, exploiting vulnerable house openings and low residential security.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect, who had been recently released from prison, acted alone and repeatedly, leveraging his local knowledge to plan the larcenies.

The police operation was praised for its proactive action and effective coordination, bringing an end to the wave of crime that had concerned the local population.
