A major Mauritian trade union is planning to escalate its campaign against raising the universal pension age to the international stage. The Confédération des Travailleurs des Secteurs Public et Privé (CTSP) has announced it will raise the issue at a global trade union summit in Brussels at the end of October.

The union’s spokesperson, Reaz Chuttoo, stated that the conference, themed “The consolidation of democracy in the world,” will be an opportunity to warn international bodies about what he calls the dismantling of the welfare state.

This move follows a protest organised by the CTSP in Rose-Hill on Saturday, 20 September. The union is against the proposed increase of the universal pension age from 60 to 65.
