Nazid Ghurbir, a Mauritian living in Canada, has had his dream of a better life shattered after a failed back surgery in India. Since January, he has been stranded in New Delhi and is now paralyzed. He needs 2.1 million Indian rupees (about Rs 2,112,300) for a final, potentially life-changing operation that could help him walk again.

Nazid, 38, moved to Canada in 2018 with his wife Yusraa and their six-year-old son Nayeel. He worked tirelessly as a warehouse supervisor during the day and a forklift driver at night, all to provide a brighter future for his family.

But in late 2024, he began experiencing severe back pain and numbness in his limbs. After several tests, doctors discovered tumors on his spine and high-risk vascular malformations called hemangiomas, which could lead to paralysis if untreated.

Canadian doctors deemed his condition non-urgent and placed him on a waiting list.

Frustrated and desperate, Nazid sought treatment abroad. He found a clinic in India where a neurosurgeon proposed a minimally invasive procedure—an injection rather than open surgery—that would cost around Rs 400,000.

Confident in this plan, Nazid took a leave from work and traveled to New Delhi in January 2025, still able to walk.

However, after the operation on January 25, things went wrong. Immediately after waking up, he was hurried to an MRI scan.

He soon learned he had developed a blood clot in his spine during surgery, causing paralysis.

He spent eight days in intensive care and was told he could leave the hospital, but he was now confined to a wheelchair.

Since then, Nazid’s life has drastically changed. Stranded in India, he cannot move without assistance.

His wife remained in Canada, caring for their son, who frequently asks when his father will return.

Nazid is enduring constant physical pain and suffered three months of high fever, with temperatures reaching 40°C daily.

His condition worsened until the Mauritian-based OMCA Foundation stepped in, helping stabilize his health.

Despite the setbacks, there is hope. Doctors now recommend spinal stimulation surgery combined with intensive rehabilitation, which could restore his ability to walk, possibly with a cane or walker.

But the cost is enormous, and Nazid, who is currently without income, cannot afford it.

The OMCA Foundation has launched a fundraising appeal. They emphasize that donations can be made through a dedicated bank account, and every rupee counts. Nazid is eligible for Zakaat, and the community’s support is crucial for his recovery.

Total needed: Rs 2,112,300
Bank details for donations:
MCB: 000449 502562
IBAN: MU26MCBL0901000449502562000USD

Nazid’s plea is simple: “I have worked hard all my life. I just want to be back with my family and live again. I still have hope.”
