Notre-Dame de Lorette Street in Curepipe Reopens After 4-Year Closure
As of 23rd April, the long-awaited reopening of Notre-Dame de Lorette Street in Curepipe has finally come to fruition, marking the end of a four-year hiatus. This momentous occasion follows extensive rehabilitation works necessitated by a significant subsidence of the roadway, attributed to a natural underground cave.
The Minister of National Infrastructure, Ajay Gunness, presided over the official reopening ceremony, attended by the Minister of Tourism, Richard Duval, and the Minister of Commerce and Consumer Protection, Michaël Sik Yuen.
Minister Gunness lamented the considerable inconveniences endured by local residents and road users alike during the prolonged closure, a predicament that had lingered unresolved for years.
According to the Minister, construction works commenced in December 2024, with General Construction Co. Ltd awarded the contract on the very same day.
He proudly announced that the project was completed ahead of schedule, well before the targeted date of 15 May 2025.
Minister Gunness commended the efficiency and dedication of the Road Development Authority and the engineering team involved in the project.
In a show of gratitude, Minister Duval acknowledged the patience exhibited by the affected residents and praised the swift and coordinated response from all parties engaged in the project’s execution.
Meanwhile, Minister Sik Yuen emphasised the significant impact the lengthy detour had on accessibility for many local inhabitants, contributing to increased congestion in the area.
He noted that upon the arrival of the new administration in November, work was initiated without delay, culminating in the successful and rapid reopening of the road.
This reopening not only restores a vital thoroughfare but also heralds a new chapter for the community, one marked by renewed accessibility and hope for the future.
