In an announcement made in Parliament on Friday, 7th February 2025, Transport Minister Osman Mahomed unveiled plans for a modern overhaul of the country’s speed camera system. At present, there are 63 fixed speed cameras operational, though four have unfortunately fallen silent, located in Saint Julien, Calebasses on the M2 motorway, Brisée Verdière, and Case Noyale. These faulty cameras were dispatched to the manufacturer, Truvelo UK, at the end of January for essential diagnostics and repairs. With any luck, they should be back up and running by April 2025.

With a clear call to action, Minister Mahomed lamented the previous government’s inaction concerning road safety.

“No new speed cameras were acquired under the former administration,” he asserted.

Instead, the authorities opted to relocate four existing cameras, whilst merely installing four dummy sites – a move he deems insufficient.

The minister did not hold back in his criticism of the previous government led by the MSM, recalling how shortly after the general elections in 2014, they made the controversial decision to deactivate all fixed speed cameras for a staggering period of seven months.

“This irresponsible act endangered the lives of road users,” he pronounced emphatically.

In a bid to tackle these issues head-on, the Traffic Management and Road Safety Unit (TMRSU) has initiated a comprehensive study aimed at completely modernising the nation’s road monitoring system.

This ambitious project will introduce a new photographic and video detection system that goes beyond merely catching speeders.

It will also target other violations such as running red lights and failing to wear seatbelts.

The government is pinning its hopes on this comprehensive revamp of the road surveillance system to significantly enhance safety on our roads.

By replacing outdated equipment with advanced devices that meet international standards for infringement detection and prevention, aiming to protect lives and promote responsible driving across the nation.
