Mauritius has been put on Cyclone Warning Class I as moderate tropical storm Belal poses a potential threat to the island.

The first bulletin was issued at 10:10 am on Saturday, January 13, 2024. Belal, previously a tropical depression, has intensified into a moderate tropical storm.

As of 10:00 am, it is located approximately 580 km northwest of Mauritius, moving southwest at a speed of around 13 km/h.

The storm is expected to approach the region, prompting authorities to issue the cyclone warning. Residents of Mauritius are advised to take preliminary precautions to ensure their safety.

The weather is forecasted to be cloudy with showers, occasionally moderate to heavy, especially in the late afternoon.

Winds from the east are expected to blow at about 20 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 60 km/h. The sea will be rough, and it is strongly recommended to avoid venturing out to sea.

Belal is projected to strengthen as it gets closer to Mauritius, leading to further deteriorating weather conditions on Sunday, January 14.

Another bulletin is scheduled to be issued around 4:10 pm.
