2030 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan Unveiled Amidst Rising Emissions

The Ministry of Environment, Waste Management, and Climate Change has unveiled a plan to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 40% by 2030.

This “National Climate Change Mitigation Strategy and Action Plan” covers various sectors, including energy, transportation, waste management, industry, product use, and agriculture.

The goal is to cut GHG emissions, particularly CO2, by 2174.4 kilotonnes equivalent CO2 (KtCO2e) by 2030, a 40% reduction from the five-year average of around 5,500 KtCO2e.

However, emissions have been on the rise, with a 3.1% increase in 2022, attributed to post-pandemic recovery.

The plan also includes the “Capacity Building Initiative for Transparency” (CBIT) to enhance emissions data accuracy by moving away from generic factors that tend to overestimate emissions.
