A dedicated team of just six women has successfully planted 3,000 mangroves between Case-Noyale and Le Morne in a major practical effort to protect coastal lagoons.

The grassroots initiative aims to move beyond postcard-perfect landscapes, establishing the mangroves as vital natural shields against climate change.

In addition to defending the coastline, these plants serve an important ecological function by capturing and storing what is known as “blue carbon”.

Key Backing and Global Initiatives

The environmental campaign has been spearheaded by the Odysseo Foundation to mark World Environment Day (#WorldEnvironmentDay).

The project received crucial backing from Varuna Biodiversité, highlighting a coordinated effort to address regional climate vulnerability.

The initiative has also been featured in an immersive report by Le Défi Vert, highlighting the hands-on nature of the replanting work.

For a deeper insight into the ecological impact of the project, a special supplementary feature titled “Blue carbon: when protecting our lagoons becomes vital” has been published.

The supplement was produced in collaboration with Le Dimanche/L’Hebdo and can be accessed online at https://bit.ly/3RLtpSg](https://bit.ly/3RLtpSg.
