3 Days of Rain: Mauritius Brace Yourselves

The Mauritius Meteorological Services has just released a heavy rain watch starting Sunday, December 29 at 6:30 AM and lasting until 10:00 AM Monday, December 30, 2024. A line of unstable clouds is sweeping in from the east, currently causing some gloomy weather mainly over the eastern part of the island, the northern areas, and the Central Plateau.

Be ready for some temporary atmospheric instability between the night of Saturday, December 28, and Tuesday, December 31.

  • Saturday (Dec 28): Localized showers, particularly over the central plateau and western regions.
  • Sunday (Dec 29) to Tuesday (Dec 31): The forecast includes cloudy periods with showers and the possibility of thunderstorms.

Temperature Forecast for Mauritius (°C):

  • Curepipe: Min 21 / Max 26
  • Port Louis: Min 26 / Max 34

Easterly winds should be moderate, ranging from 10 to 20 km/h, with stronger gusts during thunderstorms.

The sea beyond the reefs will remain moderate, with waves around 2 meters, but be cautious as they may become rough in thunderheads.

Safety First:

In light of the expected heavy thundery showers, the Meteorological Services is urging everyone to play it safe. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  1. Stay Indoors: It’s best to avoid open areas, hiking, or sea ventures. And please, don’t seek shelter under trees!
  2. Watch Your Steps: Steer clear of locations prone to flooding.
  3. Drive Cautiously: Visibility could be significantly reduced because of the rain and fog, so be extra careful on the roads.

Stay safe and plan accordingly.

Agalega Also Feeling the Heat

A special weather bulletin was issued on Saturday, December 28, at 10:30 AM, warning of heavy rain in the area.

The clouds hovering over Agalega are linked to the Inter-tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ). Expect cloudy weather with moderate to heavy showers and thunderstorms.

Winds are blowing in from the north at about 20 km/h, and they may get stronger during the rain. While the sea is currently moderate, it could become rough during those thundery downpours.

Just like in Mauritius, Agalega residents should stay in safe places and avoid outdoor activities during heavy showers, as the unstable weather is set to continue for until December 29 midday.

Rodrigues: A Slightly Different Outlook

For those in Rodrigues, expect some cloudy spells with a few showers on Saturday, December 28, but fair weather should return shortly on Sunday, December 29.

Expected Temperatures for Rodrigues (°C):

  • Citronelle: Min 21 / Max 27
  • Port Mathurin: Min 24 / Max 30

Easterly winds of 20 to 30 km/h, with gusts reaching up to 60 km/h, are predicted. The sea around Rodrigues will also be moderate beyond the reefs.
