UN Probes School Attack As Iran Confirms 1,332 Civilians Killed In Week One
The United Nations human rights chief has called for an urgent investigation following a lethal attack on an Iranian school, as the conflict sparked by US-Israeli strikes enters its second week.
The humanitarian situation has escalated rapidly since the initial strikes last Saturday, 28 February. According to Iran’s ambassador to the UN, 1,332 civilians have been killed across the country.
The region remains on a knife-edge as Iranian retaliatory actions pull neighbouring territories deeper into the crisis.
Regional Escalation and New Strikes
Fresh explosions rocked Tehran on Friday, 6 March, as Israel launched a new wave of strikes. The conflict is spreading beyond Iranian borders:
- Lebanon: An Israeli strike hit a UNIFIL peacekeeping site in southern Lebanon, wounding three Ghanaian soldiers. In Beirut, schools have been repurposed as emergency shelters for those fleeing strikes against Hezbollah.
- Israel: The IDF warned civilians of multiple waves of Iranian strikes on Friday evening, though no injuries have been reported so far.
Trump Demands “Unconditional Surrender”
In Washington, President Donald Trump has signalled a hardline shift, insisting on the “unconditional surrender” of Iran.
BBC North America Editor Sarah Smith reports that this stance suggests the administration may have abandoned hopes of a negotiated settlement.
Further heightening tensions, President Trump confirmed that US arms manufacturers have agreed to “quadruple production” of weaponry.
Warnings to Russia
The White House has also issued a stern warning regarding international involvement.
US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth told CBS News that any reports of Russia assisting Iran would be “firmly confronted.”
“The President is perfectly aware of who is talking to whom,” Hegseth added, amid what observers describe as “conflicting messages” emerging from the White House regarding the ultimate exit strategy for the war.
