2 Men Arrested as Investigators Uncover Rs12 Million in Cash Hidden Away
A high-profile joint operation between the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) and the Anti-Drug & Smuggling Unit (ADSU) has led to the arrest of two men and the seizure of approximately MUR 12 million in cash and a fleet of luxury “supercars.”
Avinash “Poum” Luchoo, a prominent figure in the northern event-planning scene, and Harris Bans Greedhur, a car rental manager, were detained following raids on Thursday, 5 March.
Both suspects faced extensive overnight questioning and are expected to be appearing in court today, Friday 6 March, to face provisional charges.
Cash and “Supercars” Seized
The investigation, which targeted the flamboyant lifestyle of Mr Luchoo, resulted in a massive haul of assets.
During a search of Mr Greedhur’s residence in Madame Azor, officers discovered MUR 12 million in various currencies—including Euros, US Dollars, British Pounds, and South African Rand—hidden inside a suitcase.
The FCC has placed a significant number of high-value assets under seal, including:
- Two Ford Mustangs (one bearing the registration “POUM LUCHOO”)
- A Porsche Cayman
- High-capacity Harley-Davidson and Yamaha Crossplane Yoshimura motorcycles
- A Ford Ranger, a quad bike, and a Kia SUV
- A boat named “Dutoit 2”, seized from the northern coastline
Alleged “Front Man” Tactics
Investigators suspect that Mr Luchoo laundered vast sums of money derived from drug trafficking through a network of companies.
Mr Greedhur is allegedly acting as a “front man” (prête-nom) to facilitate these transactions.
Detectives are currently scrutinising the turnover and financial dealings of numerous companies managed by Mr Luchoo.
Represented by counsel Me Ashley Hurhangee and Me Rishi Bhoyroo, Mr Luchoo has been asked to justify the legal origin of the funds used to acquire his extensive property and vehicle portfolio.
Impact on Music Scene
The arrests have sent shockwaves through the local entertainment industry. Mr Luchoo is the primary organiser behind the “Jalsa Lavini 2026” concert, a major cultural event scheduled for 9 May at the Anjalay Coopen Stadium.
The show, intended to celebrate séga and seggae music, features a line-up of over 20 local Mauritian artists.
The FCC investigation into the link between the two men remains ongoing as authorities continue to trace the “suspicious origins” of their apparent wealth.
