Man, 38, Surrenders to Police After Fatal Stabbing at Mahébourg Bus Station

The man is in police custody after a young woman was fatally stabbed in broad daylight at the Mahébourg bus station on Wednesday afternoon, 25 February.

Louis Jean Mike Lapuante surrendered to officers at the Mahébourg police station late Wednesday, February 25, following a manhunt. He stands accused of the murder of his partner, 26-year-old Marie Electra Andrian Coutequel.

The Incident

The victim, a resident of Plaine-Magnien, was attacked during the early afternoon at the busy transport hub.

Emergency services were unable to save Ms. Coutequel, who died from her injuries at the scene.

Police investigators recovered the weapon used in the assault—a knife—at the site of the stabbing.

Ongoing Investigation

Following his surrender, Lapuante was taken into custody and is currently being questioned by the Mahébourg Criminal Investigation Division (CID).

Authorities have confirmed the following next steps in the inquiry:

  • Post-mortem Examination: An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday evening to determine the exact cause of death.
  • Police Proceedings: The suspect remains under interrogation as the CID builds their case.
