Heavy Afternoon Thunderstorms to Strike West as Temperatures Rise 2° Higher

Heavy localized showers and potential thunderstorms are set to hit western and south-western regions this afternoon as temperatures climb two degrees above the seasonal norm.

The meteorological station issued a bulletin this Saturday, 21 February, warning of unstable, warm air circulating across the region.

While the morning remains generally fair elsewhere, cloudy developments are expected to bring moderate rainfall and lightning risks to the west, south-west, and parts of the central plateau later today.

Safety and Visibility Alerts

Weather experts have advised the public to take precautions during anticipated stormy conditions. Residents are urged to:

• Seek shelter and avoid open plains.
• Refrain from taking cover under trees.
• Avoid venturing out to sea.

In addition to the lightning risk, motorists should remain cautious as “pockets of fog” are forecast in several areas, potentially impacting visibility.

Temperature and Coastal Conditions

The region is currently experiencing a warm spell, with maximum temperatures reaching between 31°C and 34°C along the coast.

On the higher grounds, thermometers are expected to fluctuate between 27°C and 30°C.

Conditions at sea remain unsettled, with swells from the south-west reaching heights of approximately 2 metres beyond the reefs.

Winds are currently blowing from the east-north-east at a steady 15 km/h.

Overnight Forecast

Localized showers will persist in western sectors throughout the evening before clearing.

Overnight, the sky will remain partly cloudy with occasional light rain over high ground. Minimum temperatures are expected to drop to:

• 20°C – 22°C on the central plateau.
• 24°C – 27°C along the coastline.

Tropical Storm Update

The weather service is also monitoring Moderate Tropical Storm Horacia. As of 4:00 AM, the system was positioned near latitude 16.0 degrees South and longitude 74.5 degrees East.

The storm is currently tracking west-south-west at a speed of roughly 8 km/h.
