A 46-year-old Nigerian man is in police custody after authorities discovered 56 pellets of heroin concealed inside his body at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International Airport.

The suspect, identified as Joshua Chidi Yankees, was apprehended on Tuesday, 17 February, following a joint operation by the Anti-Drug and Smuggling Unit (ADSU) and the Customs Anti-Narcotics Section (CANS). Officials estimate the street value of the seized narcotics at Rs 17 million.

Interception and Medical Procedure

The passenger was intercepted shortly after his flight landed. While a physical search of his luggage yielded no incriminating evidence, customs officials proceeded with an X-ray examination.

The scans revealed the presence of foreign objects within the man’s digestive tract.

Following the discovery, Mr Yankees was escorted to Jawaharlal Nehru Hospital in Rose-Belle. Under medical supervision, he subsequently purged 56 pellets of heroin that he had swallowed.

Legal Proceedings

The ADSU has confirmed that the suspect is facing charges related to drug importation.

He remains in detention and is expected to appear before the Port-Louis Court this Wednesday to face a provisional charge of importing dangerous drugs.
