The Environmental Police seized the vehicles as part of a “Special Smoke Opacity Operation” aimed at tackling dangerous smoke levels on the nation’s roads. Officers conducted simultaneous roadside inspections across Bonne-Mère, Forest-Side, and Sorèze to identify vehicles exceeding legal smoke opacity limits. Six buses were immediately removed from service last Thursday, 5 February, after failing rigorous emissions tests during a coordinated crackdown on vehicle pollution.

Enforcement Action

The operation resulted in significant enforcement measures against motorists and transport operators:

  • 16 vehicles were issued with formal contraventions for emission offences.
  • 6 vehicles—primarily public buses—were deemed so polluting they were issued immediate road prohibitions.
  • 29 contraventions have been issued by the Environmental Police since the start of the year as part of this ongoing campaign.

Air Quality Concerns

The high failure rate among buses has reignited public debate regarding the maintenance standards of the public transport fleet and its subsequent impact on air quality.

The Ministry of Environment stated that these targeted operations are part of a broader strategy to hold both drivers and vehicle owners accountable.

Officials emphasised that the goal is not only to penalise offenders but to raise public awareness regarding the significant environmental and health risks posed by exhaust fumes.

National Priority

Authorities have confirmed that these checks will remain a regular fixture.

The Environmental Police highlighted that the increased frequency of these operations reflects a national commitment to making air quality a top priority.
