A 30-year-old former assistant driver has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the brutal murder of his partner, whose body was discovered concealed in a septic tank.

Roger Sheldon Yannick Marie was handed the lengthy custodial sentence on Monday, 9 February, by Judge Iqbal Maghooa at the Assizes.

The sentencing follows a trial in which a jury found Marie guilty by a majority verdict of seven to two on 4 February 2026.

Aggravating Circumstances

In delivering his judgement, Judge Maghooa highlighted the defendant’s total lack of remorse for the killing of 43-year-old Marie Joëlle Martine Fineau.

The court noted that while Marie had pleaded not guilty during the proceedings, he had previously provided confessions detailing the assault that led to Ms Fineau’s death.

The judge cited these admissions and the “aggravating circumstances” of the case as the primary justifications for the 40-year term.

Case History

The killing took place on 12 February 2022 at the couple’s residence in Pointe-aux-Sables.

The investigation reached a grim conclusion when the victim’s remains were recovered from a septic tank located on the defendant’s property.
