In a landmark decision for the national education system, the Cabinet has officially approved the introduction of Kreol Morisien as a principal subject for the Higher School Certificate (HSC) starting in the 2026 academic year.

The move, confirmed on Friday, 23 January, marks a significant elevation for the language within the local curriculum.

Education and Human Resources Minister is scheduled to meet with the Creole Speaking Union this Saturday, 24 January, to finalise the practicalities of the rollout.

Strategic Implementation

This transition to a principal subject builds upon the foundation laid in January 2025, when Kreol Morisien was first introduced at Grade 12 as an Advanced Subsidiary (AS) Level option.

The Mauritius Institute of Education (MIE) has been tasked with the academic heavy lifting, having already developed the comprehensive syllabi for both Grades 12 and 13.

Academic Oversight

Curriculum development is being managed by the MIE’s specialised Departman Kreol Repiblik Moris (KRM).

This dedicated department is responsible for the pedagogical advancement of both:

  • Kreol Morisien (KM)
  • Kreol Rodrige (KR)

The upcoming discussions with the Creole Speaking Union are expected to provide further clarity on the assessment criteria and implementation modalities for students entering the 2026 cohort.
