Public Warned to Stay Safe as Thundery Showers Impact Mauritius Over 2 Days

A heavy rain watch has been declared for Mauritius as a zone of instability approaching from the north threatens the island with thundery downpours and potential flooding.

The official alert, issued by the Mauritius Meteorological Services at 4:30 am today, Wednesday, 21 January, will remain in effect until at least 5:00 am, Thursday, 22 January. Forecasters warn that active cloud formations are expected to influence local weather patterns throughout the next 24 hours.

Deteriorating Conditions

While moderate showers are anticipated during the day, the Meteorological Services expect weather conditions to worsen significantly after dark.

  • Daytime: Moderate showers with a risk of thunderstorms.
  • Nighttime: Showers will become more frequent, with high risks of heavy rain and thunder.
  • Hazards: Risk of water accumulation in flood-prone areas and significantly reduced visibility due to fog patches and heavy rain.

Public Safety Advice

Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution as the instability zone moves in. The following safety guidelines have been issued:

  • Seek Shelter: Residents should remain in safe places. Avoid open areas, hiking, or sheltering under trees during thundery activity.
  • Avoid Flood Zones: Stay clear of areas known for water accumulation.
  • Road Safety: Drivers are advised to be “very cautious” on the roads as visibility will be hampered by weather conditions.

The Mauritius Meteorological Services confirmed they are monitoring the situation closely as the instability zone continues its approach.
