Mauritius Maintains Indian Ocean Lead After 1,008,098 Tourists Arrive In Record Year

The Mauritian government has moved to reassure the international community that the island remains a premier safe destination, following updated travel advisories issued by Canada, the Russian Federation, and the United States.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Regional Integration and International Trade issued a statement confirming that Mauritius maintains its reputation for safety and tranquillity, standing firm alongside other major Indian Ocean island destinations.

Officials emphasised that the government continues to place the highest priority on the security of both citizens and foreign nationals.

Negligible Incidents Reported

Addressing concerns regarding tourist safety, the Ministry highlighted that crime involving foreign visitors remains exceptionally low. Data covering the period from January to 27 December 2025 reveals that:

  • Isolated Occurrences: Reported thefts involving foreigners were described as “negligible.”
  • Nature of Crime: Incidents were identified as non-violent and opportunistic in nature.
  • No Systematic Threat: Analysis shows no evidence of organised or systemic threats targeting tourists.

Robust Tourism Growth

The Ministry pointed to strong visitor confidence as evidence of the island’s enduring appeal.

Between January and September 2025, Mauritius welcomed 1,008,098 tourists, a milestone that reinforces its status as one of the most attractive destinations in the region.

“Mauritius remains resolutely committed to maintaining its standards as one of the safest and most attractive tourist destinations,” the Ministry stated, adding that proactive measures will continue to ensure the safety of all visitors.

Government Commitment

The Mauritian authorities remain fully engaged in protecting the interests of international travellers.

By implementing proactive security strategies, the government aims to uphold the island’s long-standing reputation for peace and stability, ensuring it remains a secure environment for the hundreds of thousands of visitors it attracts annually.
