Rodrigues Earthquake: Government Pledges Support as Homes Left Fractured
Residents of Rodrigues, whose homes were damaged during the 5.4 magnitude earthquake on 6 January, have been promised official support following an urgent assessment of the island’s most affected regions.
The commitment was made by Deputy Chief Commissioner Johnson Roussety, who led a field visit on Wednesday, 7 January, alongside a team of engineers from the Infrastructure Commission.
The delegation observed visible structural damage and significant cracking in several private residences across the island.
Immediate Response and Assessment
The earthquake, which struck on Tuesday, 6 January, has left a trail of structural concerns in its wake.
During the site inspections, officials documented the extent of the damage to ensure that families impacted by the seismic activity receive the necessary assistance.
“Several houses have suffered visible structural damage,” Mr Roussety confirmed, adding that a support framework will be established to help those whose properties were compromised.
Review of Building Regulations
Beyond immediate relief, the Rodrigues Regional Assembly is looking toward long-term safety.
The Deputy Chief Commissioner announced that experts will be called upon to conduct a comprehensive review of building standards on the island.
This re-examination of construction norms aims to ensure that future developments are better equipped to withstand seismic events of this nature.
