New Year Joy as 6 Babies Born in Public Hospitals
Six newborns—three girls and three boys—were welcomed into the world across Mauritius’s five regional hospitals during the first twelve hours of New Year’s Day. According to the Ministry of Health, maternity services remained fully operational throughout the festive period to facilitate the arrivals. The births were evenly split between natural deliveries and Caesarean sections, with three of each recorded.

The First Arrival
The honour of being the first baby of the new year went to a baby boy, born at 00:25 at Flacq Hospital.
The mother, 29-year-old Saranga Appavou, hails from Providence, Quartier-Militaire. This is the second child for Ms Appavou, who already has a seven-and-a-half-year-old daughter.
Delivery Statistics
The Ministry confirmed that the holiday period did not impact the efficiency of the public health sector. The data for the first twelve hours of the year is summarised below:
| Total Births | 6 |
| Boys | 3 |
| Girls | 3 |
| Natural Births | 3 |
| C-Sections | 3 |
All five regional hospitals contributed to the festive tally, ensuring a busy but successful start to the year for the island’s maternity staff.
