Emergency Services Urge The Public To Dial 115 For Any Fire Crises
More than 250 firefighters have been deployed across Mauritius as the Mauritius Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) enters a state of 24/7 high alert ahead of New Year’s Eve. Station Fire Officer Mansingh Dowluth, speaking from MFRS headquarters, confirmed that reinforced teams are on standby throughout the island, with a specific focus on 31 December near hotels hosting firework displays.
Officials warn that the unique nature of the celebrations—marked by decorations, firecrackers, and crowded public spaces—often leads the public to overlook basic fire safety.
In the event of an emergency, citizens are urged to call the 115 toll-free hotline.
Pyrotechnic Safety Protocols
The MFRS issued strict guidelines for the use of firecrackers and fireworks to prevent avoidable tragedies. Key recommendations include:
- Purchasing: Only buy products in good condition that include clear instructions.
- Supervision: Children must never handle pyrotechnics without adult oversight.
- Operation: Use long-reach lighting tools and ensure fireworks are never pointed at people, bushes, or buildings.
Barbecue and Gas Hazards
Barbecues remain a primary source of festive incidents. Fire officers advise a minimum safety distance of three metres from any flammable structures. Equipment should be checked for grease build-up and faulty regulators, while the use of alcohol or accelerants is strongly discouraged.
Regarding Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, the MFRS highlighted the following:
- Cylinders must remain upright in well-ventilated areas.
- Hoses should be inspected for damage, specifically from rodents.
- In a leak: Do not flip electrical switches. Ventilate the area immediately and move the cylinder outside.
Public Space Management
Responsibility for safety in shopping centres, cinemas, and nightclubs lies with the operators. The MFRS mandates that emergency exits remain unobstructed, alarms are tested, and extinguishers are fully functional.
“A successful New Year is, above all, a New Year without drama,” Mr Dowluth concluded, wishing the population a happy year ahead provided safety rules are respected.
