Mauritian Educator Crowned Africa’s Top Teacher in Addis Ababa
Sachitanand Ramdhonee, a dedicated Design and Technology specialist from Mauritius, has been named the winner of the prestigious 2025 African Union Continental Best Teacher Award.
The 39-year-old educator received the top honours during an official ceremony held at the African Union headquarters in Addis-Abeba, Ethiopia, on 3 October.
The award serves as a high-level recognition of Mr Ramdhonee’s long-standing commitment and significant contributions to the field of education.
A rigorous selection process
Standing out among candidates from the African Union’s 55 member states, Mr Ramdhonee’s victory followed an intensive evaluation period. The selection process included:
- A comprehensive assessment phase.
- A formal interview.
- Final confirmation via official correspondence from the awarding body.
Given the continental scale of the competition, the award highlights the exceptional standards maintained by the Mauritian education sector on the international stage.
Fifteen years of excellence
A resident of Belvedère, Lallmatie, Mr Ramdhonee has spent fifteen years in the classroom. He is currently a member of the teaching staff at Sir Abdool Razack Mohamed State Secondary School in Port Louis.
Throughout his career, he has built a reputation for professionalism and rigour, specifically within the discipline of Design and Technology.
Continental recognition
To mark the achievement, the African Union sponsored Mr Ramdhonee’s travel to Addis Ababa. He joined fellow laureates at the dedicated ceremony to officially collect the distinction, which celebrates the vital role of teachers in driving continental progress.
