Port Louis Targets 1,500 Donors in "Mega Blood Donation" Drive to Secure National Stocks

The capital is today hosting the 2024 “Mega Blood Donation” event, with health officials aiming to collect at least 1,500 units of blood to bolster national reserves during the critical festive period.

The massive collection drive, which takes place today, Wednesday 17 December, runs from 07:00 to 18:30 on the Esplanade of the Port Louis Municipality.

Organized by the Blood Donors Association in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Wellness, local government, and TotalEnergies, the initiative seeks to address the daily demand of 150 to 200 units of blood required by the nation’s hospitals.

A Call for Unity

The campaign, themed “A Country United by Blood,” was officially launched last Thursday at the Port Louis Council Room. Dewanand Hossen, President of the Blood Donors Association, emphasized the ethical necessity of voluntary donations.

“We cannot manufacture blood,” Mr Hossen stated. “It takes one human, it takes two humans to make blood.” He highlighted the vital dependence on the public to maintain a safety threshold of 600 to 800 units in the national blood bank.

Strategic Goals and Figures

Junior Minister of Health and Wellness, Anishta Babooram, set an ambitious target for the day, noting that over 53,000 units were collected in 2024. She warned, however, that the system remains under pressure from heavy surgical procedures, chronic illnesses, and road accidents.

The Lord Mayor of Port Louis, Aslam Hossenally, marking the 24th edition of the event, praised the perseverance of the organizers and confirmed that the city has provided full logistical support to ensure the day is a “true success.”

Innovation and Corporate Support

Representing the private sector, Ravirajsingh Reetoo of TotalEnergies described each donation as an “act of love” capable of saving up to three lives. The company has mobilized its own staff and provided operational support for the collection.

Meanwhile, MP Dr Sandeep Prayag called for “concrete solutions” and innovation to expand the donor base, advocating for better planning and a more visible presence in local neighbourhoods to keep the donation chain functioning efficiently.

Facilities on Site

The Esplanade has been fully equipped to handle a high volume of participants. Medical teams are on-site alongside dedicated rest areas and information hubs to assist donors throughout the day.

The event concludes a campaign that relies on a central message: with national stocks requiring constant replenishment, regularity in donation is the only way to bridge the gap between supply and demand.
