A ‘Floating wheelchair’ designed to give children with special needs full access to the ocean was officially launched on Thursday, 20 November, at Flic-en-Flac public beach.

The innovative equipment, which allows children with disabilities to safely enjoy the sea, was introduced on World Children’s Day. The initiative is a collaboration between the Beach Authority and the Special Education Needs Authority (SENA).

Expansion and Safety Measures

The service will not be restricted to Flic-en-Flac. The ‘Floating wheelchair’ will also be made available at three other beaches: Saint-Félix, Belle-Mare, and Mont-Choisy.

To ensure necessary safety conditions are met, participation in the programme will require prior registration with the Beach Authority.

Testimonials and Therapeutic Benefits

Children from the Georges Charles Foundation, the Association des Parents pour la Réadaptation d’Infirmes Moteurs (APRIM), and the Association de Parents d’Enfants aux Besoins Spéciaux (APBS) were among the first beneficiaries to test the new equipment upon its launch.

Dr. Veemen Kalisetty Appadu, President of SENA, highlighted the therapeutic benefits of sea bathing for children with special needs. He also confirmed that swimming training will soon be offered to SENA personnel to effectively support this type of activity.

Official Attendance

The launch event was attended by Ashok Subron, the Minister of Social Integration, Social Security and National Solidarity, along with the Junior Minister of the Ministry of the Environment, both present to welcome and support the initiative.
