Emergency Turbine Arrives at SSR Airport to Avert Power Cuts
A Russian cargo plane landed at Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam (SSR) Airport this morning, carrying a strategic, urgently-ordered turbine for the Savan¬nah power plant to secure the national electricity supply and prevent widespread power cuts.
The dramatic arrival of the heavy-lift aircraft, operated by the Russian carrier Volga-Dnepr Airlines, was confirmed by a source close to the Omnicane group’s management, which operates the Savan¬nah plant.
The turbine’s crucial role is to buttress the plant’s production of electricity, which is supplied on demand to the national grid.
Complex Logistics Amid Sanctions
The objective of the express delivery is explicit: to mitigate any risk of failure or blackout at a time when energy demand remains high and any disruption could “fragilise” the country’s power supply.
The plane touched down at 9:00 AM local time, just a few hours before the scheduled arrival of French President Emmanuel Macron, drawing further attention to the event.
Volga-Dnepr Airlines specialises in transporting heavy and oversized freight, including industrial, energy, aerospace, and humanitarian equipment.
The aircraft’s journey from Turkey followed a complex itinerary due to European sanctions, a logistical constraint it will face again on its return, stopping only in countries authorised to refuel the Russian jet.
