Speed and Drink Driving Warning: 106 Lives Lost Prompts Urgent Plea

Mauritius is grappling with a “worrying increase” in road fatalities, with the death toll since the start of the year reaching a staggering 106 victims, prompting a stern call to action from road safety advocates.

Alain Jeannot, President of Prévention Routière Avant Tout (PRAT), has “pulled the alarm bell” over the grim figures, urging authorities to take immediate and decisive steps to curb the escalating crisis.

Call for Infrastructure and Regulatory Overhaul

Mr. Jeannot specifically called on the relevant authorities to step up maintenance of the road network and to harmonise speed limits in residential areas. These infrastructure and regulatory improvements are seen as crucial to reducing the risk for road users.

Focus on Driver Responsibility

Beyond official action, the PRAT President also emphasised the critical need for greater accountability among drivers. He insisted that motorists must strictly respect speed limits and adhere to the absolute prohibition of consuming alcohol before driving.
