Former British Chief Judge, 78, Drowns in Mauritius Lagoon

The lagoon of Trou-d’Eau-Douce, Mauritius, was the scene of a tragic drowning on Sunday, October 26th. The victim was a 78-year-old former British chief judge, whose identity has not been released, and who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The fatality occurred when the former judge ran into difficulty while swimming, according to local police reports.

Officers from the National Coast Guard retrieved the body and attempted to resuscitate him. However, personnel from the local emergency medical service (SAMU) could only confirm his death at the scene.

An autopsy conducted subsequently concluded the cause of death was asphyxia due to drowning.

The deceased and his wife had arrived in Mauritius just a few days prior on October 21st, and were due to leave the island the 28th October.
