MK Unveils 3 New Policies, Including Free Organ and Cancer Patient Transport
Air Mauritius has announced it will now transport live human organs for free as part of its corporate social responsibility. The move, which will initially focus on embryos for in-vitro fertilisation (IVF), is a significant step toward supporting advanced medical procedures in Mauritius.
The airline’s new policy will allow passengers to carry a hermetically sealed container with the organ in the cabin as an extra piece of luggage, with all costs covered by Air Mauritius.
The initiative follows a comprehensive safety risk analysis and the establishment of procedures validated by competent authorities, ensuring safe and secure transport.
The new service is expected to pave the way for future medical advancements in the country, including organ and tissue donation and transplantation.
Strict Requirements for Transport
To qualify for the free transport service, passengers must present all necessary medical and security documents, including entry permits and certificates from health authorities, before the flight.
Passengers must also allow sufficient transit time and adhere to airport security and border authority requirements.
The organs must be placed in a special, leak-proof container that meets strict packaging standards.
This is including a leak-proof primary receptacle for the organ, a secondary leak-proof packaging around the primary container, and a rigid outer package clearly marked “LHO” (Live Human Organ).
The container’s dimensions (length, width, and height combined) must not exceed 115 cm, with a maximum weight of 7 kg. If dry ice is used, the quantity must not exceed 2.5 kg.
The airline’s new policy builds on its existing support for passengers, which was recently expanded in August to include new policies for bereavement and flexibility for cancer patients.
