The Sir Anerood Jugnauth (SAJ) Hospital in Flacq is grappling with a potential staffing crisis after doctors began refusing to work overtime, leading to prolonged waits for patients, according to Health Minister Anil Bachoo. The minister posted on his Facebook page last night that numerous doctors at the hospital have recently opted not to work beyond their normal hours.

Minister’s appeal

In his post, Mr Bachoo acknowledged the doctors’ right to refuse overtime but emphasised that their decision had left patients, including “babies, children, young, and old,” in prolonged states of “suffering and anguish.”

He stated that as minister, he could not remain indifferent and must “take action” and “make decisions” to ensure citizens receive the care they need.

Mr Bachoo has called upon doctors from other hospitals to provide support to the SAJ Hospital to maintain its services.

He reassured the public that the issue would be resolved soon and asked for patience, vowing never to “abandon the patients of this country.”

Broader context

The health minister insisted that the situation is confined to the SAJ Hospital. He praised doctors across the nation who continue to work diligently and perform overtime as they always have.

Mr Bachoo expressed his “deepest gratitude” to these doctors, hailing their “sense of responsibility and patriotism” as a “strength for Mauritius.”

He concluded his post by reaffirming his commitment to the public, pledging to do whatever is necessary to ensure no patient is left without care and that compassion, discipline, and professionalism remain the guiding principles of the healthcare system.
