Metro Express Ramp Up Security After 10 Attacks on Staff
Despite repeated public appeals, physical and verbal assaults against staff on the Metro Express light rail system have continued, with about ten cases reported since the start of the year. While some perpetrators have been prosecuted, other investigations remain ongoing.
In response, Metro Express Limited (MEL) insists that the safety of both staff and passengers remains its “top priority” and has detailed a multi-layered security strategy to address the issue.
A Multi-Pronged Security Strategy
The company’s approach hinges on close collaboration with the police. Regular meetings are held to coordinate actions across the network. Crucially, the police’s Operational Control Centre (OCC) is alerted immediately during any incident, ensuring a rapid response.
This is supported by MEL’s own internal security team, which conducts regular patrols in stations and on trams. However, the article acknowledges a past challenge: for a time, some Ticket Inspectors were hesitant to confront non-paying passengers due to fear, making spot checks less frequent.
Employees, speaking on condition of anonymity, have noted that the situation is improving with strengthened patrols and enhanced police collaboration.
Technology as a Deterrent
Beyond personnel, MEL is leveraging technology to create a safer environment. Each tram wagon is equipped with an emergency intercom, allowing passengers to communicate directly with the driver. If the driver is unavailable, the call is automatically routed to MEL’s control centre, which maintains a permanent link with the police.
Furthermore, a comprehensive video surveillance network covers all infrastructure, stations, and vehicles. “Video recordings can be viewed and analysed at any time for investigative purposes,” a MEL communications representative stated.
Transition in Security Provision
The security presence is currently in a transitional phase. Following the termination of its contract with Edmond Security Services Ltd, a temporary internal security team is protecting MEL’s infrastructure and passengers. A tender process is underway to appoint a new permanent security provider, though MEL has declined to give details, citing confidentiality.
The company reaffirmed its commitment to a “zero-tolerance” policy against incidents and its goal of maintaining the Metro Express as a safe and reliable transport link for the thousands of passengers it serves daily.
