Metro Attack: Fines up to Rs 100,000 for MEL Staff Assault

A shocking incident aboard the Metro Express has triggered outrage and a swift crackdown on unruly behaviour. After an attack on a security officer, MEL has vowed to take a hard line against aggression and fare evasion.
The attack, which occurred on Sunday-16 February, saw a passenger physically assaulting a security guard and verbally abusing a ticket inspector.
A video of the incident has quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread condemnation.
In response, MEL’s Senior Communication and Marketing Officer, Béatrice Bauda, has issued a firm warning.
Those who attack MEL staff could face fines of up to Rs 100,000, or even imprisonment.
For those caught travelling without a valid ticket, penalties range from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000.
Ms. Bauda confirmed that a formal complaint has been lodged with the police, and an investigation is underway.
MEL has stressed its zero-tolerance policy towards any form of aggression against its employees.
The transport operator also reiterated the importance of valid travel tickets.
Passengers must possess a valid ticket, whether purchased at a station, via the MyT Money app, or using a MECard.
They must also ensure they “TAP ON” the card when boarding and “TAP OFF” when disembarking.
