In a brazen act of theft, diamonds worth more than Rs 54 million have been reported stolen from a diamond processing factory in Curepipe. The incident, which has garnered the attention of local law enforcement, was revealed during an inventory check of the factory’s vault earlier this February.

The missing items include five highly valuable stones: a 3.84-carat diamond, a 2.96-carat diamond, two diamonds weighing 3.82 carats each, and a 3.91-carat diamond, with an estimated total value of approximately Rs 408,000.

However, investigators have indicated that this unsettling discovery is just the latest chapter in a protracted saga that dates back to October 2024.

At that time, the factory’s local director, tasked with preparing for the shipment of rough diamonds to Dubaï, unearthed a shocking reality: larger diamonds had been swapped out for smaller ones, suggesting a long-running scheme of deception.

Additionally, company equipment valued at around Rs 775,000 has also vanished from the premises.

With the total losses, including the missing diamonds and stolen equipment, now estimated to exceed Rs 54.3 million, the case has raised significant concerns about security protocols within the industry.

Despite the goods being insured with a local company, the stolen diamonds remain untraceable, complicating the recovery efforts.

The Criminal Investigation Division (CID) of Curepipe is currently leading the investigation into this high-profile theft, as detectives work to piece together the sequence of events and identify potential suspects in the case.
