Angry Crowd Jeers Disgraced Ex-Cop Charged in Rs17Million Fraud Scheme

Former Special Striking Team (SST) chief, Superintendent of Police (SP) Ashik Jagai, appeared in Port-Louis court today, August 14, under tight security, as an agitated crowd jeered his arrival.The high-ranking officer, wearing a helmet and bulletproof vest, was escorted by a heavy police presence amid protests from onlookers. Jagai remained in custody after Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) investigators opposed his release. He is set to return to court on August 21.

Jagai faces three provisional charges of “Public Official Using Office for Gratification” following his arrest by the FCC on August 13 after a cautioned interrogation.
The case centres on allegations that he authorised an overpayment exceeding Rs 17 million under the “Reward Money” programme, despite only Rs 292,300 being justified.

The ex-police superintendent was swiftly returned to a police cell after Thursday, 14th August, hearing, as investigations continue.

The FCC’s probe has drawn significant public attention, with tensions high outside the courthouse during his brief appearance.
