Agriterra Kicks Off 2025 Sugar Harvest, Aiming for 67,000 Tons

Since Monday, 7th July, Agriterra has officially started its 2025 sugarcane harvest season. The company’s machinery is operational, and teams are actively working in the fields. This key milestone was marked by a special interfaith blessing ceremony held on July 2, a few days before the harvest began. The event aimed to symbolically bless the upcoming campaign and reinforce shared values.

This year, Agriterra expects to process around 650,000 tonnes of sugarcane, including 300,000 tonnes from its own plantations.

The goal is to produce between 65,000 and 67,000 tonnes of sugar, mainly specialized sugars, with 63,000 tonnes targeted.

Sébastien Mamet, General Manager of Agriterra, emphasized the importance of 2025.

“We’ve strengthened our foundation, introduced new technologies, digitized our processes, and invested heavily in training. It’s our teams, their skills, and teamwork that will drive our future success,” he said.

Prior to the start of crushing, employees gathered for a blessing ceremony with Father Philippe Goupille, Imam Abdool Kadir Khan, and Pandit Lingen.

This interreligious prayer highlighted values of unity, inclusion, and respect, which are central to Agriterra’s corporate culture.

Mamet explained, “This ceremony reaffirmed the importance of a united team based on shared values—an essential step in shaping our future.

We aim to go beyond empty speeches and build an Agriterra that is more committed, coherent, and true to its roots. Our goal is to support the evolution of Mauritius’s sugar industry while prioritizing human values in our transformation.”

For employees, the blessing held deep significance. Ziyaad Emambocus, a new Field Operations Officer in the Agriculture Department, praised the initiative.

“It makes us feel included. It brought everyone together. During the off-season, we prepared for this moment, and now we are ready to harvest the results of our efforts over the past six months,” he said.

Long-time employee Eddy Verte, who works in mechanical harvesting, shared similar sentiments.

“We have two key prayers for the season: one at the start of the harvest and one at the end. These blessings go beyond rituals—they symbolize our hopes for prosperity, success, and safety throughout the campaign. They help us approach this busy period with confidence, aiming to avoid accidents and ensure a smooth, successful harvest,” he stated.

The season officially kicked off Monday with the ceremonial start of the first crushing, next to the cane processing line at the factory.

The event was lively and motivating, with teams participating in this symbolic act that reflects the company’s collective commitment to performance, innovation, and teamwork.
