The Inter-College Games return to Mauritius with enthusiasm after several years away. The official opening ceremony for the 2025 edition took place on Monday, July 14, at the Côte d’Or Sports Complex athletics stadium.

The event was attended by Youth and Sports Minister Deven Nagalingum and Education Minister Mahend Gungapersad.

This marks a significant step in reviving school sports in Mauritius. Organized jointly by the Ministries of Youth and Sports and Education, the 2025 Games involve 11,357 students from 155 colleges across Mauritius and Rodrigues.

The week-long competition features five sports: athletics, badminton, football, volleyball, and table tennis.

Minister Nagalingum emphasized that the revival of the Inter-College Games was a key promise in their electoral manifesto and campaign speech.

“What we promised, we are now delivering,” he said, visibly emotional in front of a lively crowd.

He also highlighted that supporting school sports has been a top priority since his appointment.

The minister praised the close cooperation between his ministry and the Education Department, especially in using sports as a tool to fight drug abuse.
