Former Deputy Governor Under Warning in MIC Rs300 Million Scandal
Hemlata Sadhna Sewraj-Gopal, the former Second Deputy Governor of the Bank of Mauritius, has been interrogated “under warning” by the Financial Crimes Commission (FCC) on Monday, 24th March. This interrogation is part of an extensive investigation into the alleged misappropriation of a staggering Rs 300 million that has impacted the Mauritius Investment Corporation (MIC), with Apavou Hotels Ltd suspected of benefitting from these questionable activities.
The focus of Sewraj-Gopal’s interrogation is on the approval process for the purchase of 1,596 shares in Eastcoast Hotel Investment Ltd, which was obtained for a significant sum of €48 million—around Rs 2.4 billion.
This figure sharply contrasts with the entity’s original investment request of only Rs 2.1 billion.
The repercussions of these inquiries could have far-reaching impacts on the financial and political landscape, as the FCC navigates the complexities of financial misconduct.
