Tragedy Strikes in Bénarès Lagoon: Teacher Drowns, Rescuer Missing

A harrowing double tragedy unfolded in the lagoon of Bénarès on Tuesday, 11 February. Nabil Soogy, a 39-year-old teacher, tragically lost his life in the waters of this southern lagoon.

In a desperate attempt to save him, Rakesh Kautick, a 38-year-old local, bravely jumped into the turbulent waters.

However, both men found themselves engulfed in peril as the lagoon surged violently around them.

While the lifeless body of Nabil Soogy was recovered, the search is still ongoing for Rakesh Kautick, who remained missing.

Emergency services launched an immediate search operation, but as night fell, the efforts were suspended. Search teams are set to resume their grim task at first light on Wednesday, February 12.
