Resistans ek Alternativ's Shake-Up Electoral Proposals

As the next general elections approach, ‘Resistans ek Alternativ’ is currently circulating its electoral program. This program revolves around four key themes: constitutional reforms, workers’ program, ecological transition, and other proposals for transformation.

In the chapter on institutional reforms, ‘Resistans ek Alternativ’ made several proposals:

I. Constitutional Reforms

  • Recognize every candidate as a Mauritian citizen
  • Allow voters to recall a deputy
  • Introduce the concept of a referendum
  • Inscribe village and municipal elections into the Constitution
  • Decentralize the powers of the Prime Minister
  • Create a Constitutional Court
  • Rebalance electoral districts according to voter numbers
  • Protect biometric data in the Constitution
  • Eliminate foreign military bases in Mauritius’ exclusive economic zone

II. Workers’ Rights

  • Introduce a new minimum wage that recognizes seniority
  • Implement Disaster Leave during natural disasters
  • Disseminate cyclone warnings before 4:10 am
  • Provide insurance coverage for workers required to work during cyclone warnings of levels three and four
  • Offer compensation for victims of natural disasters
  • Recognize Menstrual Leave
  • Introduce a Cost of Living Allowance
  • Establish a National Minimum Living Wage
  • Reintroduce the National Pension Scheme
  • Align universal pension with minimum wage
  • Eliminate the current disciplinary committee
  • Establish collective bargaining in the externalization sector and other areas
  • Recognize the right to strike

III. Ecological Transition

  • Acquire lands from Roches-Noires Ressorts and Résidence Ltd
  • Co-manage project with Mauritian Collective for Roches-Noires
  • Create Catchment Wetlands near cities and villages
  • Develop a plan to protect lagoons from sedimentation
  • Elaborate a rehousing policy for flood-prone areas
  • Launch a National Public Commission for water management
  • Launch a program for drones and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) made in Mauritius for surveillance of Mauritius’ territorial waters
  • Ban single-use plastic and plastic bottles
  • Prohibit pesticide use

In the chapter on socio-economic transformation, Resistans ek Alternativ intends to address other proposals through expanded commissions.
